Overnight backpacking near Red River: Columbine trail

This is an overnight backpack out and back via Columbine Canyon.

We will leave Los Alamos around 8am On Saturday. It is about 2 hour drive on pavement.  Starting at Columbine campground trailhead, we will hike up the steep trail for 5 miles with about 2000 feet gain. The trail follows the beautiful Columbine Creek. After setting up camp, we may have time to look for mushrooms nearby.

Sunday morning with an early start, we will day hike to the ridge junction to the Lobo Peak trail. Turning west we will hike to the 11849 feet summit. Maybe 5-6 miles round trip and over 2000 feet gain on the day hike. The views on the ridgeline should be spectacular. We return to camp, pack up, and hike back to the car.

You are responsible for all your backpacking items including rain gear. There is a chance of thunderstorm in the afternoon. Plesae be prepared.
