We’re organizing a rewarding two-night backpacking trip into the beautiful and rugged Handies Peak Group—and we invite fellow LA Mountaineers to join us! We’ll explore the high basins and peaks of the San Juan Mountains, with the opportunity to summit several Centennial peaks, including Handies Peak (14,048 ft), Redcloud Peak (14,034 ft), and Sunshine Peak (14,001 ft). For those looking to push further, there’s also the option to climb two unnamed Centennial Thirteeners just east of Redcloud. Expect incredible alpine scenery, wildflowers, solitude—and early starts!

Trip Overview:

When: Depart Los Alamos Friday morning, August 15, return Sunday, August 17. The drive is about 5 1/2 hours so we’ll try to car pool / caravan if possible.

Where: Hike in from the Silver Creek/Grizzly Gulch Trailhead near Lake City and establish a high camp near timberline Friday afternoon.

Climbing Plans:

The group will split into two parties based on peak goals. All summit days will begin with early morning departures—hitting the trail before sunrise to maximize daylight, avoid storms, and enjoy the quiet beauty of dawn in the high country.

Party A:

Climb Handies Peak on Saturday. Return to the trailhead area to camp near vehicles Saturday night. Depart at your own pace Sunday.

Party B:

Climb Redcloud and Sunshine Peaks on Saturday. Optional: Tag two unnamed Centennial Thirteeners just east of Redcloud (listed in Roach’s guide as 13,811′ and 13,832′). Return to the trailhead Saturday night. Climb Handies Peak early Sunday and return to LA that evening.

There will be no formal regrouping on Sunday—each party will wrap up the trip on their own timeline.

What to Expect: A two-night alpine experience; summit opportunities for multiple Centennial peaks; flexible participation and route options; early morning trail starts each day for safety and summit success. Experience & Gear Requirements: This is an intermediate-level outing and requires previous backpacking and high-altitude hiking experience; comfort with early starts, elevation gain, long days on the trail, and variable weather. Essential gear: warm layers, rain gear, sun protection, and standard backpacking equipment and supplies. Self-sufficiency encouraged; gear sharing if desired - coordinate in advance.

This trip is being co-led by Tim Rennick (tim_rennick@hotmail.com) and Norbert Ensslin (norbert.ensslin@gmail.com). If interested, email Tim and Norbert for more information or to sign up.
