This is a low-mileage (ca. 16 - 20 miles), high-elevation backpack with 2 nights of camping at high-altitude lakes. We'll summit Conejos Peak, a thirteener, as a bonus on the way.  It's all on trail so should be straightforward. I have done about half of this loop but have not yet started from this particular TH - we may not be able to drive the last 1.8 miles. Drive time should be on the order of 3.5 hours.

Friday: leave LA around 8 am (earlier if weather conditions dictate) and drive to TH. Hiking distance is about 6.5 miles with 1,700 ft elevation gain (+ potentially 1.8 miles)

Saturday: casual (pending weather) start in the morning and hike about 6 miles with 1,400 ft elevation gain

Sunday: early start (6 - 7 am on the trail), hike 3.5 miles to TH, ca. 1,300 ft descent (+potentially 1.8 miles), drive home

The goal is to get home by 2 pm.

Beginning or new backpackers are welcome, this is an excellent trip for a gear shakedown. After setting up camp, we'll spend the afternoons exploring the surroundings. There are T-storms and rain in the forecast, so we may have to adjust our daily schedule to be off exposed areas. We will finalize the plan once we have a more reliable forecast.
