Bandelier Exploration

Let's take a hike in Bandelier's backcountry, to see some lovely ruins and petroglyphs.
(The trip will be a hard hike if you are in moderate shape and it will be a moderate hike if you are in good shape)
This is a 14 mile round trip hike, of which about 1/2 will be on regular maintained trails.  The other half will include some following of cairned trails, and some bushwacking and route finding, in part due to the great crop of grasses and weeds we have from the summer rains.  I expect this to take 8 hours round trip, possibly 9 hours, due to the route finding needed. 

Road Bike from Jemez Springs to the Gilman Tunnels

This trip is a bicycle ride on paved roads from Jemez Springs to the Gilman Tunnels and back.  The Gilman tunnels are located in the most scenic section of the Guadalupe River Box.  These tunnels were originally blasted out of the rock in the 1920's for a logging railroad.

As my friends know, I cannot get enough of the canyon country, and am planning our fall trip even though our spring trip is a still couple of months away. This will be a mid-October expedition, the finest time of the year, to the junction of Silver Falls Canyon and the Escalante River in Grand Staircase/Escalante National Monument, supported by our favorite llama packer, BJ Orozco of Llama 2 Boot. This is the same destination as a wonderful trip that we took in the fall of 2002.

I am very sorry to say that I am cancelling our Ute Mountain trip due to a foot injury that I suffered last Thursday.  It appears to be healing nicely, but I feel that Ute Mountain would be too much for me as I have been cautiously hiking everyday since the accident to allow an accurate judgement.
Today Sept 29, 2015 was Judgement Day!

Climbing in 11 Mile Canyon, south of Lake George, Co.  This trip is geared for the new Graduates of the LAM Climbing School.  As this is the third time this trip is posted, it's entirely possible that the new Graduates will die of old age before this trip has a completion date. I'll need several lead climbers to help me make the new (old) climbers feel right at home, please contact me for bribes (I mean, "inducements to lead").

We willl spend the week of September 13 climbing objectives in the Eastern Sierra. The nucleating event will be an incursion into the Whitney Zone from the trailhead at the North Fork of Lone Pine Creek. We have 12 slots for climbers camping at Iceberg Lake, a cirque near the base of Mt. Whitney @ 12,600 feet. One party of six will depart on the 13th in a team led by Brett Kettering and another party of six will depart on the 14th in a team led by Michael Altherr. The permits allow all participants to stay in the Whitney Zone through Friday the 18th.

Lake Peak via Raven's Ridge

We will return to a classic local hike this Saturday. Lake Peak offers huge views across much of Northern New Mexico and a true alpine experience close to home. The hike leaves the Santa Fe Ski Basin parking lot and travels a little over 3 miles and 2000 vertical feet to the summit, with the final approach across a rocky catwalk. We might return the way we came, or work our way down to Nambe Lake and out on the Winsor trail. We will meet in Los Alamos at 8:00 AM at a location to be announced, and join up with any Santa Fe participants at the Albertson's parking lot.

In the Mountaineers tradition, we will travel in style to the San Juan Mountaineers in the Silverton area. I have rented the OPUS hut, which is quite comfortable with hot and cold running water, catered meals, and drinks served. The hut is at 11,800 feet and accessible by car down a rough road. Their web site says "Old mule trails left from the days of hardrock mining, offer adventurous explorations around the hut, many of which do not show on popular maps. Many short hiking loops leave right from the back door of the hut.
