Dear Mountaineers,

It's springtime in Northern New Mexico which means it's a good time to think about some "shoulder season" hiking in the Abiquiu area. Bill Priedhorsky has graciously offered to co-lead a trip with me to the Window Rock on Saturday, April 28th. The hike starts about 8 miles northwest of Espanola on US 84. Total hike distance is about 9 miles with an elevation gain of less than 1000 feet. The description in Craig Martin's book "100 Hikes in New Mexico" says, "One of New Mexico's largest rock spans -- the Window Rock is punched through a thin ridge of hardened lava. From below, the black, gnarled stone around the opening looks like nasty teeth ready to chomp whomever wanders by."

According to Martin's description, the trail is largely dirt road/sandy arroyo with a bit of a scramble at the end. We plan to leave Los     Alamos about 9 a.m. and convene at the trail head to begin hiking about 10. If the group chooses, we could celebrate our day with     dinner in Espanola on our way home. Please contact me (Paula) at peabee@swcp.com if you want to carpool or for trailhead details if you'd like to meet us at the beginning of the hike.

Sincerely, Paula Barclay

PS from Bill: This is Paula's show. I'll be along to help and back up, but I'm very pleased that

she will be taking the lead.
