The 18th Annual Rubber Ducky Float Trip

Join Zack for a Rio Grande floating adventure. We will start at 8am on Saturday July 11 at the Red Dot trailhead, hike down to the river, continue up the river trail to the bottom of the Blue Dot. There, we will stop and enjoy lunch and inflate our floating toys/mattresses/water wings. We will then float back down to the Red Dot, wash off in the clean springs, and hike back to our cars.  It's about 4 miles, plus the 900-foot up and down elevation gain of the Red Dot trail.

I'd like to repeat a day hike that we did in 2021. This hike takes one to the northernmost of the San Pedro Parks meadows, which are more often reached from the south (but not with the current fire). The route to the trailhead takes FR 172 to the south from state 96, about 4 miles west of Coyote. The trailhead leaves from the Resumidero campground, then goes about 3.4 miles and 1000 feet up to the high meadows (2021 picture below). We will leave Los ALamos at 8 AM this Friday, a Lab holiday, carpool to the trailhead, and return to Los Alamos hopefully by dinner time.

This is a multi-day backpack for what is considered the most beautiful setion of the CDT in Colorado. The hike itself is on a trail that is generally very well maintained. I have done the southern half of this trail and some sections of the northern half. Thus some of the terrain will be new to me as well meaing there is an exploratory component. In order to do the 65 miles in 4 days, it will be pretty healthy hikes every day (15-20 miles). The elevation gain over the distance is about 8,000 ft, so manageable.
