Do you want to spend time outside on Black Friday instead of in stores? REI's #OptOutside campaign inspired us to provide this guided hike to help you enjoy the outdoors. Opt to spend the day outside, enjoying nature, rather than fighting the crowds or staring at a screen.

The location for this hike will be determined at a later date, once we know the snow situation and trail conditions. Plan on a moderately difficult hike that will take about 4 hours. The group will stop around noon to enjoy lunch on the trail.

Let's start the day with a little hike right here in town. I expect the hike to take about an hour and a half, and will take a route through a shallow canyon without an established trail.

We have an extra bedroom in a house we rented in Pagosa, and are looking for someone who would like to join in on some Wolf Creek skiing. Decent base up there, and as they say,they have the best snow in Colorado. We will drive up to Pagosa Thursday afternoon/evening after turkey, ski Friday and Saturday at Wolf Creek, and drive home after Saturday's skiing. This trip is a bicycle ride on paved roads from Jemez Springs to the Gilman Tunnels and back. The trip is in conjunction with the Pajarito Environmental Education Center (PEEC), and is free for Los Alamos Mountaineers Members and PEEC Members, but PEEC charges a small fee for non-members.

Do you know what to do when someone is hurt, sick, or lost in the outdoors? This two-day SOLO Wilderness First Aid (WFA) course will cover the basics of how to help someone in need of first aid. It will help you know what to do in a variety of scenarios and accidents. This is a great opportunity for outdoor enthusiasts, trip leaders, or people who spend time in remote, rural, or disaster-prone areas. The class will meet both Saturday and Sunday, November 3 and 4, from 8 AM to 5 PM, at PEEC 2600 Canyon Road, Los Alamos.

In a revival of an old tradition, I'd like spend a hiking weekend based in Bluff, Utah, which is the closest corner of the canyon country, just 5 1/2 hours drive from Los Alamos. Going in late October, we should have fine, cool weather, perfect for exploring the slick rock and ruins in the vicinity of Bluff, farther afield in the canyons that carve into Comb Ridge, in the canyons that drain Cedar Mesa, and in White Canyon and its tributaries. We spend many winter long weekends in the vicinity, but haven't been back since 2009.

Join Zack and Dan Creveling on Sunday, Oct 21 for a morning jaunt from the Bandelier Visitor Center along the Burro Trail to the river and back.  This is a mapping and scouting expedition, but we'll see some nice fall colors and have a nice time as we hike somewhere around 12 miles.   We'll meet at 9am.

Join Bill Priedhorsky for a beautiful hike on Kitchen Mesa Trail at Ghost Ranch on Saturday, October 20. Kitchen Mesa is a gypsum-capped high point that stands above the headquarters of Ghost Ranch. It lies at the edge of the Colorado Plateau in a region of red rock cliffs and desert formations.
