Rubber Ducky Float Trip
The 17th Annual Rubber Ducky Float Trip
Join Zack for a Rio Grande floating adventure. We will start at 8am on Saturday July 12 at the Red Dot trailhead, hike down to the river, continue up the river trail to the bottom of the Blue Dot. There, we will stop and enjoy lunch and inflate our floating toys/mattresses/water wings. We will then float back down to the Red Dot, wash off in the clean springs, and hike back to our cars. It's about 4 miles, plus the up and down elevation gain of the Red Dot trail.

Cruces Basin not-so-difficult backpack
I would like to announce a two or three-night backpacking trip into Cruces Basin for July 10-13. While this is not a difficult backpack in terms of the difficulty of hike, participants should have some previous backpacking experience. Cruces Basin is pristine wilderness located west of San Antonio mountain near the New Mexico/ Colorado border. We’ve been a few times before, and it is well worth going back. This trip will be a mellow adventure with a short hike to our camp followed by hikes to explore the Basin.

Santa Clara Canyon Rim trail
Although Santa Clara Canyon is owned by the pueblo, sweeping views into it are accessible from the ridge to the north, in the Santa Fe National Forest. This is an out and back on the high trail, following hike #32 in the Salzmans' classic hiking guide. We drive up forest road 144 from Fairview, going about 27 miles past the trailhead for Chicoma peak, finally picking up a trail that runs just below the canyon rim, with views far below. If we hike to the end, the round trip is 9 miles, but we are unlikely to go that far.

2 night backpack over the 4th of July weekend
I had to reschedule the longer Wolf-Creek to Cumbres Pass trip, so I'm offering a shorter alternative - ca. 30 miles in the South San Juans. We'll do a loop on the South Fork/Rincon trails. The South Fork has downed trees that will slow us down a bit. Total it's about 30 miles. This will be a 2-night backpack.

Cerro Pedernal climb
Cerro Pedernal is a landmark visible throughout northern New Mexico, standing as a sentinel at the northern end of the Jemez Mountains. The summit is a classic destination and views from its 9,862' narrow top are spectacular. Reaching the summit takes about a two-hour drive from Los Alamos and a hike of about 8 miles round-trip with 2,000 feet of vertical ascent, per the map below. The hike may be shorter if we are able to drive the first part of the route.
