Trip Leaders - both current and future! Let's have dinner together on Wednesday evening May 1 at 6 pm. Let's talk about how to lead trips and how to deal with the challenges that can come up. If you have been interested in leading a trip, but are not quite certain how to get started - this is the evening for you. If you have led trips, come and share your experiences.
We will have regular and veggie burgers - you bring something to eat or drink to share.
Let me know if you can come, and I'll send you the address. Hope you can make it.
April 20th is the first day of the National Park week. No national park pass or entrance fee is required on this date. Let's hike a long loop in Bandelier on Frijoles Rim and Frijoles Canyon.
Mileage: ~13 miles.
Elevation gain: ~1600 feet.
From Bandelier Visitor Center, we take the Long trail to the Frijoles canyon rim and enter the Bandelier Wilderness shortly on the top. This trail gives us expansive views of several mountain ranges nearby.
We will eventually go down to Upper Crossing of Frijoles Creek and connects to the Frijoles Canyon trail.
To get the canyon trips rolling early for 2024, we will go again to Blanding, Utah, for 3 days of hiking on April 18, 19, and 20, Thursday-Saturday. I’ve reserved lodging in Blanding, Utah, in the same condos as last year and 2022. From there, we can pick our hikes over a wide range of the canyon country: the northern end of Comb Ridge, Mule and Arch Canyons, Natural Bridges National Monument, White Canyon, and/or the Needles section of Canyonlands National Park. We will have plenty to choose from, and the 3 days will go quickly.

Mountain Biking trip to Fruita and/or Moab. Since I don't know who will sign up I'll leave the exact agenda open. But Notionally it will be to reserve a VRBO house appropriate to the group size in Grand junction Colorado and Bike in fruita. If the group desires we can either day trip to Moab or find a second place there. The length of the trip is flexible but a minimum of 3 mights seems apropos. If the consensus is to hike then we can hike that day. I am not a grand junction expert but I'm told the downtown is revitalized and has entertainment too.
Let's do a XC Ski at Cumbres Pass on Sunday March 10th. The ski will be from the Neff Mountain trailhead to Cumbres Pass. This is a kick-glide tour of about 6 miles on a Forest Service Road. We will need 2 cars to do the car shuttle.
Cross country skis with fish scales and metal edges are needed for this tour. Bring glide wax, ski poles, knapsack, sunscreen, water, lunch, gloves & hats, layers of clothing.
Because this is the first day of daylight savings time - we will meet at 8 am in Los Alamos for carpooling. We should be back to LA around 5 pm.

Join us for an intermediate, cross-country ski or snowshoe outing to Canada Bonita Friday night, February 23. The second full moon of 2024, also known as Snow Moon, will provide enough light to enjoy the scenery. Depending on your preference, the round trip will be anywhere between 4 and 8 miles. It will be of intermediate difficulty and participants should have previous experience skiing/snowshoeing. Bring your own favorite gear.
We will leave promptly at 9 PM from the gate at Camp May Road up on Pajarito ski hill. We plan to be back to our cars by 11 PM.
In a repeat of a classic outing, let's head north for a weekend downhill/ crosscountry/ snowshoe around Monarch Pass. Monarch Ski Area should offer fine skiing. They report 29" of base as of Jan. 7 – more will accumulate as the season progresses We will head for Salida to establish a base in comfortable houses, and spend our days in winter sports in the Monarch Pass area. Some of the Pajarito season passes offer three free days at Monarch, Monarch is free for age 69 and up, and otherwise tickets are relatively inexpensive online.
Join us at the SALA Events Center at 3 PM in Los Alamos for The World Beautiful, a multi-media tale of cross- generational friendship. Witness the heartwarming bond between a 93-year-old mountaineer (our very own Los Alamos Mountaineer David Brown) and his autistic caregiver through their outdoor adventures in Los Alamos. There will be a $15 entrance ticket.
