Although the snow is very sparse around Los Alamos, hope springs eternal, and I trust that southern Colorado will have reasonable snow cover by mid-January. I propose to head north to take advantage of that snow. Even now, there is something there (19” base at Monarch Ski Area) vs. what you can see in the hills around Los Alamos.  As we have done in past years, we will head for Salida to establish a base in a comfortable house or cabin, and spend our days in winter sports in the Monarch Pass area.

Let's hike the Ancho Canyon to Blue Dot trail along the Rio Grande River trail - it is a beautiful local winter-time hike.  

It is a 9.5 mile hike, with 1300' descent near the beginning of the hike and 1000' ascent at the end of the hike.  We'll stop to see Ancho Rapid, and then hike the River trail north, past the Red Dot Trail to the Blue Dot trail.

Let's hike the wonderfully rebuilt Frijoles Canyon Trail, from the Bandelier Visitors Center, to Upper Crossing, then up to the south rim of Frijoles Canyon, returning to the Visitors Center via the Frijoles Rim Trail.  It is a 13 mile, 5-6 hour hike.

Let's meet at Sullivan Field at 8 am to carpool.  Bring a Park Pass if you have one.  Bring lunch, and hiking gear appropriate for mid November.

  This trip is a bicycle ride on paved roads from Jemez Springs to the Gilman Tunnels and back. The trip is in conjunction with the Pajarito Environmental Education Center (PEEC), and is free for Los Alamos Mountaineers Members and PEEC Members, but PEEC charges a small fee for non members.

I'd like to explore a place I've never been - the badlands country west of Cuba, NM, which is within the relatively new San Juan Basin Badlands Recreation Area. What I've seen - an article in New Mexico magazine, see https://www.newmexico.org/nmmagazine/articles/post/badlands-hiking-83869/) sounds like a great place for an explore, with hoodos, bare rock, and other odd formations. We will be cross-country hiking in rough and trailless terrain.

Let's try a "key exchange" hike of the Windsor Trail (trail #254) in the Pecos Wilderness of the Santa Fe National Forest.  One group will hike from the Santa Fe Ski Basin to the Windsor Trail head just west of Cowles (14 miles, 1200' elevation gain, 2800' down) and one group hiking from the Windsor Trailhead just west of Cowles to the Santa Fe Ski Basin (14 miles, 2800' elevation gain, 1200' down).   We will exchange keys on the trail (or possibly before leaving Los Alamos, if folks have 2 sets of keys), and both groups will meet back in Santa Fe, to re-exchange cars, and possibly go out t

Trusting that our beautiful fall weather continues a bit longer, I invite you to join me for one of New Mexico’s classic outings: a climb up Wheeler Peak, at 13,162 feet the high point in the state. This is a strenuous but non-technical hike that covers about 8 miles and climbs 3,200 feet. We will ascend from Williams Lake, which will be a first for me - it has been a while, and my last trip to the summit took the old Bull of the Woods route.
