The trip is a mountain/gravel bike or hike on the dirt road traversing the 20,000 acre Edward Sargent Wildlife Area in Chama, NM (2 hour drive from Los Alamos). The ride is a 15 mile round trip (500 feet elevation over 7.5 mile) on mostly packed dirt with a couple of mildly bumpy rocky sections, approximately 3 hour ride. An elk calving closure is in effect at Sargent so bikers and hikers must stay on the main road.
With Bandelier opening some of their trails on Friday, I propose an outing. There are a limited number of trails open, but let's do what we can. We will meet at Juniper campground at 9:00 AM. From there, our hike takes us 1.5 miles down the Frey trail to headquarters, with a 500 foot drop, then 1.5 miles downstream (with another 400 foot drop) to the upper falls, where the trail ends since it washed out years ago. We will then backtrack to headquarters and lunch there - I think there is a cafe where one can buy lunch (but I am not sure), or bring your own.
Once more returning to the canyon country, our spring 2022 trip will be based in the Grand Staircase/Escalante National Monument, near the confluence of Sand Creek and its Willow Patch tributary. We will reach our camp by hiking down from McMath point, south of Boulder, Utah. We will explore the oases, slick rock, domes, and huge views of the canyon country. The outing is fairly physical, with several hours of hiking every day, with a comfortable base camp to return to every evening. The route to camp might be just a few miles, but the route is over rugged, trailless country.
